Chidori is a Grade 8 student who loves teddy bears has never fallen in love.  She always fights with a boy at school named Igarashi.  She says  " His ego is as tall as his height" and he says " She's really small but her mouth is really big".  One day they're fighting in the library when the library monitor, Takaoka, comes and takes Chidori's side.  Chidori thinks that Takaoka is really nice but Igarashi doesn't like him, and thinks that he has a grudge against him.  By accident, they knock some bookshelves over and have to stay late to clean up.  On their way home, they meet a classmate of Igarashi's, sdf, who seems to like Igarashi and reminds him that tomorrow is her birthday.  Chidori leaves them alone together, though Igarashi watches her as she goes.  When Chidori gets home, she's talking to her teddy bear, thinking about what kind of guy she would like.  She thinks that she wants a totally different type of guy than Igarashi, and then thinks of Takaoka, and wonders if she likes him. She gets a phone call, and is totally shocked to hear that Igarashi has been hit by a car and that he's in the hospital!  She runs upstairs to get her stuff to go to the hospital, but Igarashi(or rather, his spirit)is in her room!  She's too frightened to listen to him, so he takes over her teddy bear to talk to her.  He says that he wants her to find his schoolbag because there's something important in there, and when Chidori teases him by asking if it's a birthday present for the girl he likes, he gets embarrassed.
The next day, Igarashi(still in the bear), hitches a ride to school with Chidori even though she wants him to stay at home, and trouble starts when Igarashi involuntarily moves and speaks near Takaoka.  Chidori makes up a lie and rushes outside with Igarashi, and starts arguing with him to stay home, when Takaoka comes out pursuing her.  He asks if there's someting special about the teddy bear, and wants to look at it but Chidori won't let him.  Takaoka says that he was worried about Chidori because in the classroom she was acting weird, and asks her to tell him if anything is wrong.  He says he wants to help her because he likes her, and the first chapter ends there, with Chidori totally surprised and Igarashi looking not very happy.
This was a short story, only three chapters long, but still cute.  Takaoka figures out that the teddy bear is really Igarashi, gets jealous and throws him into the river.  Chidori runs in after him and saves him, and when Igarashi apologizes because her teddy bear (his 'body') got all wet, she realizes that she was only worried about Igarashi, not her teddy bear.  They exit the river and Takaoka runs up, sorry that he got carried away.  It turns out he has Igarashi's bag, and the present, a cutegirl teddy, isn't for Eriko, which Chidori thought, but for her!  Igarashi was too shy too give it to her before because they always fought.  Igarashi tells Chidori that he likes her, and that he just pretended to need the schoolbag to be close to her, but before she can respond, Irashi's spirit leaves the teddy bear.  Chidori cries as she holds the teddy, saying she hates Igarashi because he left before she could tell him she also liked him.
She gets sick from going in the river, and stays home for a week.  Whenever she looks at the teddy and it doesn't move, she gets sad.  When she finally goes outside(carrying the two bears), she meets Takaoka, remarks that the teddy bear still reminds him of Igarashi.  Chidori starts to cry and Takaoka reaches out to comfort her, and suddenly a voice says "I won't let you make Chidori cry!"  Chidori turns around and sees Igarashi, who didn't die when he left the teddy, but returned to his own body.  Chidori shouts at him, "WHY AREN'T YOU DEAD?!" and starts crying, whereupon Igarashi hugs her.  Takaoka and Eriko(she came in later) leave them alone, and they fight with each other some more but hold each other's hand in the end.
