Bangaihen
4(Ribon Original June 2001): This is quite
different from the other stories, and almost qualifies as a story in itself.
None of the characters from W Pinch are main characters here, though the
main boy character is Inogami's little brother, Mikitaka. Mikitaka,
like all Inogami boys, has to dress as a girl until he's 15 because of
an old family tradition to keep their males safe until puberty. Mikitaka
makes a very beautiful girl, and is always being asked out on dates, but
fortunately he has a 'bodyguard', Komako, a girl the same age as him who
lives in the Inogami house and protects Mikitaka. The story starts
with a typical after-school scene involving guys asking 'Miki' out and
being somewhat forcefully turned(or bashed) away by Komako, applauded by
Mikitaka. A black limo pulls up and they get in, Mikitaka complaining
about how stupid and perverted boys are. Komako reminds him that
he's a male just like them. When they get home, Mikitaka says he
doesn't want to do his tea ceremony, though if Komako does it as well he
will. His mother says he's hopeless, and adds that an important visitoy
is coming today. His father is also there, wearing some kind of mask
and scarf to cover his head, with an author's comment that he's not very
important. His older sister Maki(17), sneers that he needs his protector
along even to a tea ceremony even though he's a boy. He starts to
fight with her, and the steward, Inukai Genzou(Komako's dad), asks if he
had trouble with boys today, because his father(who's into fortune-telling)
predicted it. Mikitaka says it was ok thanks to Komako. Komako's
family, who have protected the Inogamis for a long time, are usually the
only ones who know that the Inogami boys ARE boys and not girls.
Komako is very happy
that she has the chance to protect someone as beautiful as Mikitaka. and
vows to protect him from being sullied by any impertinent males with her
life. Too late, she sees that a young man has caught hold of Mikitaka's
hands, and the man just says 'beautiful...'. Mikitaka tries to politely
get him to release his hand, but the guy just apologizes, saying he doesn't
know anything about the tea ceremony. Mikitaka, ticked off, calls
to Koma, who rushes in with her spear, but is stopped by Mikitaka's mom,
who calmly tells her to pull back. Komako doesn't know what to do,
and Mikitaka's mom apologizes to the guy. He says it's fine, but
to make it up, he wants to go on a date with 'Miki'. Before Mikitaka
and Komako can protest, the mom has agreed, saying it's nothing^_^
Later, Mikitaka
demands to know why he's supposed to go out with that 'ero-otoko', and
his mom replies that he is the son of a business partner in a very important
project that the Inogamis are involved in, and if they can come to an agreement,
it would be good for the Inogami firm. If they don't come to an agreement,
the Inogami estate will lose its money-at least, according to Mikitaka's
dad's fortune-telling. The project that they're working on is a theme
park to rival Osaka's Universal Studio and Tokyo' Disneyland, which will
make Shimane into a foremost tourist spot! In a quieter voice, Mikitaka's
mom declares that no longer will people wonder where Shimane is, or say
it's hard to remember, and Mikitaka tells them to first get a Shinkansen
going there, adding that the author(Azuki Ryou) has to travel 8 hours to
visit home :).
Mikitaka asks what
happens when it's discovered he's a boy, and his mom tells him as long
as they get the agreement, it doesn't matter, he just has to fool them
for that long. Komako states that she'll ensure Mikitaka's relationship
and the Inogami business, protecting both the Inogami company fortune and
Mikitaka's innocence! Maki looks on, thinking how good it feels that
Mikitaka has to put up with this. She's bitter because Mikitaka and
Yuuki were always more popular than her with boys, and hopes that Mikitaka
will be caused some worry by the Matsudaira guy.
The next day, Mikitaka
and Koma talk about Matsudaira, and Mikitaka reveals that he's 20, 6 years
older than him! Mikitaka wishes that Yuuki was there, thinking that
Matsudaira would surely go for him then, and Koma agrees, commenting that
Yuuki is the 'cute' type. Komako thinks of Yuuki, who violated the
Inogami tradition and cast off his female disguise before he turned 15,
so was told by his father that he had to live somewhere else until the
'curse' was gone. She remembers how, when leaving, he said there
was someone he wanted to meet as a male, and asked her to take care of
Mikitaka. Koma sighs and thinks that there's less than a year before
Mikitaka turns 15. He won't need her after that, and aloud, Koma
wonders how Yuuki is doing. Annoyed, Mikitaka mentions that she and
Yuuki were good friends, but reminds her that she's his protector,
so she has to stay by him while he's 'female'. Mikitaka tells Koma
she can't get a boyfriend until then either, and after a surprised pause,
Koma reassures him, saying she's dedicated to her role as protector.
She's gotten her 'faithful dog' ears back again. Amused, Koma reflects
that Mikitaka hasn't changed, he's still childlike in demanding what he
wants, but Koma thinks that she enjoys it when he insists on things.
They're interrupted
by Matsudaira, who says Miki's mom said he could take 'her' for a drive,
and adds, taking Miki's hands, that watching the scenery(Shinjiko, a peninsula)
by the setting sun would be wonderful, and Mikitaka responds randomly.
Koma literally cuts in, breaking the contact and declaring that she'll
come too. All through the date Koma inserts herself between Matsudaira
and Mikitaka, resolving not to let him touch Mikitaka with one finger.
As they're leaning on a fence watching the sunset, Matsudaira tries to
get rid of Koma, ordering her to go fetch a coat for Miki, who might be
cold. Mikitaka gets mad and hits Matsudaira's hand away. He
coldly announces that Koma is one of the Inogami household, and he won't
forgive someone who orders her around like a common servant. He and
Koma leave, though Koma says she doesn't care, and left behind, Matsudaira
thinks that 'Miki's' angry face is beautiful as well...
Walking away,
Koma worries that Matsudaira might be mad, but Mikitaka says he doesn't
care, and Koma doesn't have to stand for that crap. Mikitaka took
her hand to lead her away, and now Koma notices it. Mikitaka only
holds it tighter while he apologizes for causing her unpleasant memories
like that. He asks if she can hold on a little longer, and then when
he returns to being a boy, he'll...
He's cut off by
his mom, who whacks him upside the head with a fan, asking what he'll do
if Matsudaira is mad over this. She decides that to fix it, the family
will do its utmost to produce a 'love-love' date for Mikitaka and Matsudaira,
while, Koma is oblivious, still thinking how much bigger Mikitaka's hand
is now. She wonders what's wrong with her...
For the date, Mikitaka
and Matsudaira are going on a private pleasure boat. Maki tells Matsudaira
that the roof is pulled down when passing under low bridges, and though
the passengers have to crouch down as well, it gives them a chance to 'get
close'. 'Miki' shows up in jeans and casual dress, and Maki is upset
that he didn't wear the outfit she chose(a miniskirt and heels^_^;;)
Matsudaira says Miki is beautiful in boyish clothes too, and trying to
get away, Mikitaka says he has to go to the washroom. He takes Koma
to a different boat, and tearfully tells the driver that they're being
followed by suspicious people. The driver lets them in, and Mikitaka's
mom notices that they've escaped. The whole family, along with Matsudaira,
sets out in their boat chasing after Mikitaka and Koma. They
quickly catch up to them, but the smaller boat gets away when Matsudaira
forgets to duck for a bridge and, hitting it, falls into the water.
Koma reminds Mikitaka that he'll be scolded after this, but Mikitaka says
he doesn't mind, now they can have a date without interference. Koma
tells herself that he was joking but can't stop being nervous. Mikitaka
announces that he's decided to become a boy again, and asks Koma for her
support. He comments that he'll have to leave like Yuuki did, and
Koma interrupts him, saying he can't. Mikitaka asks why she's against
it, and Koma thinks that if he returns to being a boy, he won't need her
by his side anymore. She tells Mikitaka that she doesn't want him
to because her job is to protect the Inogami family, and it's only a year
more anyway, so she'll protect him until then. Mikitaka turns away,
saying forget it, and Koma hears the driver warning of another bridge.
She puts her hand on Mikitaka's shoulder to push him down, but he pushes
her down, and leaning over her, tells her that he doesn't want to be protected
by her anymore, even if it's just for a year. The roof is raised,
and Koma, hurt, wonders why Mikitaka said that.
Back at the Inogami
mansion, Matsudaira is nursing his head bump. Maki talks to him,
saying that Miki is only shy, and with backward girls like that a strong
attack is best. She continues, saying that she'll arrange for he
and Mikitaka to be alone together the next day, and then it's up to him.
Matsudaira smugly agrees, while in the background the mother is relieved
that he's so stupid.
W Pinch cameo!!
Mikitaka gets on the phone and calls Yuuki on his keitai, who just happens
to be visiting Akina's apartment while Arisa and Iyo are too. Mikitaka
blames Yuuki for the whole mess, saying if he hadn't left, Matsudaira wouldn't
have noticed him and he wouldn't have had a fight with Koma. Mikitaka
commands Yuuki to come home now, but Yuuki says no. Then he tells
Mikitaka that 'masculinitiy' isn't just about looks, and that if something
is really important to him, he should act instead of just waiting-even
if he can't obtain it, while he looks at Arisa (kyaa!) Subdued, Mikitaka
wonders why Yuuki never seems feminine even though he has a 'girl-face'.
He hears who he thinks is his koto teacher, but when he looks up, it's
Matsudaira, who says he's not having a lesson today...
In the garden, Koma
regrets that Mikitaka minded being protected by her so much, and wonders
if making him wear a bra was a bit too much, or maybe, to prevent him from
having to take a shower at school, when she told everyone he had his period,
that was going too far...she thinks that she never knew how said it was
being away from him. Then she notices Matsudaira going into the room
where Mikitaka is alone, but when she gets up to follow, Maki stops her,
saying there's no need to worry, even a perverted guy like him wouldn't
do much to a junior high girl. She says that if Mikitaka is a real
man, he won't mind giving up a kiss or two for the sake of the family,
and Koma retorts that he will mind because he's a man. She
asks Maki to move, but Maki reminds her that the relationship was decided
by their parents, and asks if she's going against the Inogami family.
Matsudaira is trying
to kiss Mikitaka, saying she shouldn't be afraid because he's a gentleman,
when a spear appears in the wall beside Matsudaira's head, held by Koma.
She shouts that she won't forgive anyone who makes a move on Mikitaka-sama.
Then she apologizes to Mikitake, saying she wanted to protect him even
though it's a nuisance to him. The rest of the family, hearing the
noise, comes running, and when Mikitaka's mom asks what is going on, Maki
shows up, dripping(Koma pushed her into the pond), and says Komako is fired.
Since she went against her master, she no longer has a place in the Inogami
household. Remembering Mikitaka's childhood demand that she stay
by him always and protect him, Koma silently apologizes to him. Maki
shouts at her to get out, when Mikitaka says wait, and cuts off his hair!
He removes part of his kimono so his masculine chest is obvious even to
Matsudaira, and states that if Koma goes, he goes. This time, he
says, he'll protect Koma! He and Maki start fighting again while
their mom tries to explain to Matsudaira, who just says that they're just
alike. Maki and Mikitaka pause, and Matsudaira comments that with
the same hairstyle they're like twins, so if Maki grows her hair, she'll
look like Mikitaka did. He grabs her hand and says she's beautiful,
and while Koma and Mikitaka can't believe how fast Matsudaira changed preferences,
the mother seems very satisfied...and determined to get them together,
saying that she always thought that Maki was a better match for him.
Watching as Matsudaira and his mom drag Maki away, Mikitaka wonders what
all their troubles were for.
Dressed in normal
boy clothes, Mikitaka says he didn't have to cut his hair, and Koma asks
what he'll do for school the next day. He responds that he'll
wear a wig and go as a girl again, and asks if Koma minds. She says
no, because whether his appearance is a boy or a girl, there's only one
beloved Mikitaka-sama for her! She thinks that as long as they're
involved with this family, there will surely be ups and downs, but for
now they'll just hold hands and continue their date...
